ジョージ・クリントンらPファンクの貴重なアウトテイク、デモ集の登場です。時は1973年。この一年で彼らはある意味大ヒットとなるUp For the Downstrokeだけでなく、Standing Of The Verge Of Getting On、そしてChocolate Cityと75年のリリース,果てはホーニー・ホーンズの77年のA Blow For Me A Toot For Youも含めてこの時期にかなり多くの範囲に渡って曲を作っていたことになります。そして驚きなのは既にジェームス・ブラウン的ファンクは彼らの中に確立しており、そこに彼らなりの色を加えれば完成、というギリギリのレベルとなっている曲が少なくなく、それらが完成したものとは大きく異なるアーシーなアレンジで、それが逆にとてもダンサンブルでファンキーに聴こえることが見逃せません。ビリー・ネルソンの脱退、そしてブーツィとキャットフィッシュのコリンズ兄弟、ゲイリー・シャイダー、コーデル・モースンらをメンバーに迎えていよいよ本格的にPファンクが始動する時期、つまりファンク・ロック色が前面に出たサウンドを既に一年でほぼ完成の域にまで高め、後の名曲の萌芽を数多に作り上げていたことがこの音源集でわかるでしょう。激ファンキーなエディ・ヘイゼルとブーチィーの本格的なジャムなんてむしろこの時期こそベストなのではないでしょうか。名曲のオリジナル、全く異なるファンク、グレン・ゴインズのゴスペル、バーニー・ウォーレルの変態曲、途中で終わってしまうのがあるものの、ここにはPファンクの始まりでありPファンクとは何かがわかる演奏が詰まっています。
